class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>In 1871 Mackay became the first foreign missionary to be commissioned by the Canada Presbyterian Church (predecessor of both the\u00a0<a title=\"Presbyterian Church in Canada\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Presbyterian_Church_in_Canada\">Presbyterian Church in Canada<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a title=\"United Church of Canada\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Church_of_Canada\">United Church of Canada<\/a>), arriving in Taiwan on New Year&#8217;s Eve, 31 December 1871.<\/p>\n<p>After consulting with Dr.\u00a0<a title=\"James Laidlaw Maxwell\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Laidlaw_Maxwell\">James Laidlaw Maxwell<\/a>\u00a0Sr., a\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Medical doctor\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medical_doctor\">medical doctor<\/a>\u00a0serving as a\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Presbyterian Church of England\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Presbyterian_Church_of_England\">Presbyterian Church of England<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Missionary\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Missionary\">missionary<\/a>\u00a0to southern Formosa (1865), Mackay arrived at\u00a0<a title=\"Tamsui District\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tamsui_District\">Tamsui<\/a>, northern Formosa in 1872, which remained his home until his death in 1901. Starting with an itinerant\u00a0<a title=\"Dentistry\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dentistry\">dentistry<\/a>\u00a0practice amongst the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Taiwanese aborigine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taiwanese_aborigine\">lowland aborigines<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-Sketches153_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0he later established churches, schools and a hospital practicing Western biomedicine. He learned to speak\u00a0<a title=\"Taiwanese Hokkien\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taiwanese_Hokkien\">vernacular Taiwanese<\/a>\u00a0fluently, and married &#8220;Minnie&#8221; Tiu (<span lang=\"zh-Hant\" xml:lang=\"zh-Hant\">\u5f35\u8070\u660e<\/span>;\u00a0<i><span lang=\"nan\" xml:lang=\"nan\">Tiu\u207f Chhang-mi\u00e2<\/span><\/i>), a Taiwanese woman.<\/p>\n<p>He was described by\u00a0<a title=\"William Campbell (missionary)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Campbell_(missionary)\">Rev. William Campbell<\/a>, a contemporary missionary, as<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"templatequote\">\n<p>&#8230;a little man, firm and active, of few words, unflinching courage, and one whose sound common sense is equalled only by his earnest devotion to the Master. [&#8230;] During the first year of his stay at Tamsui, he began an educational and evangelistic training movement among the young men who came about him, and this has been greatly blessed throughout that northern part of the Island.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Sketches153_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The churches he planted later became the Northern\u00a0<a title=\"Synod\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Synod\">Synod<\/a>\u00a0of the present\u00a0<a title=\"Presbyterian Church in Taiwan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Presbyterian_Church_in_Taiwan\">Presbyterian Church in Taiwan<\/a>. In 1896, after the 1895 establishment of\u00a0<a title=\"Taiwan under Japanese rule\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taiwan_under_Japanese_rule\">Japanese colonial rule<\/a>\u00a0in Taiwan, Mackay met with the\u00a0<a title=\"Japan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Japan\">Japanese<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Governor-General of Formosa\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Governor-General_of_Formosa\">Governor-General of Formosa<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Maresuke Nogi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maresuke_Nogi\">Maresuke Nogi<\/a>. Some families in Taiwan today, particularly of lowland-aboriginal\u00a0<a title=\"Kavalan people\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kavalan_people\">Kavalan<\/a>\u00a0ancestry, trace their surname &#8216;\u5055&#8217; (&#8216;Kai&#8217; or &#8216;Kay&#8217;) to their family&#8217;s conversion to\u00a0<a title=\"Christianity\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christianity\">Christianity<\/a>\u00a0by Mackay.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a title=\"Canada\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canada\">Canada<\/a>\u00a0Mackay was honoured during his two furloughs home by the Canadian Church. In 1880,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Queen's University, Canada\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queen%27s_University,_Canada\">Queen&#8217;s College<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a title=\"Kingston, Ontario\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingston,_Ontario\">Kingston, Ontario<\/a>\u00a0awarded him an honorary\u00a0<a title=\"Doctor of Divinity\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Doctor_of_Divinity\">Doctor of Divinity<\/a>, presented by\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Principal (school)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Principal_(school)\">Principal<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"George Monro Grant\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Monro_Grant\">George Monro Grant<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Chancellor (education)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chancellor_(education)\">Chancellor<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Sandford Fleming\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sandford_Fleming\">Sandford Fleming<\/a>. Before departing in 1881, he returned to\u00a0<a title=\"Oxford County, Ontario\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oxford_County,_Ontario\">Oxford County<\/a>, where monies were raised to start\u00a0<a title=\"Aletheia University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aletheia_University\">Oxford College<\/a>\u00a0in Taiwan; a number of young people in the county were inspired to follow Mackay&#8217;s example and entered into missionary service with a number of Christian denominations.<\/p>\n<p>In June 1894, at the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"General Assembly (presbyterian church)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/General_Assembly_(presbyterian_church)\">General Assembly<\/a>\u00a0meeting in\u00a0<a title=\"Saint John, New Brunswick\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_John,_New_Brunswick\">St. John<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"New Brunswick\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Brunswick\">New Brunswick<\/a>, Mackay was elected\u00a0<a title=\"Moderator of the General Assembly\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moderator_of_the_General_Assembly\">Moderator<\/a>\u00a0of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, the highest elected position in the church. He spent the following Moderatoral year travelling across Canada, as well as writing\u00a0<i>From Far Formosa: the island, its people and missions<\/i>, a missionary\u00a0<a title=\"Ethnography\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ethnography\">ethnography<\/a>\u00a0and memoir of his missionary experiences.<\/p>\n<p>In 1894 he spoke out against the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Head tax (Canada)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Head_tax_(Canada)\">head tax<\/a>\u00a0imposed on Chinese immigrants to Canada. As moderator of the Presbyterian church, he broke precedent to speak in favor of a resolution opposing this tax, saying it was unjust and racist.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Mackay&#8217;s\u00a0<i>From Far Formosa<\/i>\u00a0is considered an important early missionary\u00a0<a title=\"Ethnography\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ethnography\">ethnography<\/a>\u00a0of Taiwan and an important contribution to the anthropological understanding of the culture and customs of the people of Taiwan during that period. Mackay himself was as fascinated by the cultures and habitat he found as he was disapproving of native practices he viewed as idolatry. He spoke approvingly of the destruction of art and other artefacts previously regarded as sacred by his newly Christian converts. Of his rustic apartment in an aboriginal village, Mackay wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"templatequote\">\n<p>To that place the cast-off machinery of idolatry was brought, and more than once I dried my clothes before fires made of idolatrous paper, idols, and ancestral tablets. Three men were employed to carry other paraphernalia of idol-worship to the museum in\u00a0<a title=\"Tamsui District\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tamsui_District\">Tamsui<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Mackay was otherwise an enthusiastic collector of cultural artefacts and specimens of local flora and fauna. Many items collected by him are today preserved at the ethnology department of the\u00a0<a title=\"Royal Ontario Museum\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Ontario_Museum\">Royal Ontario Museum<\/a>\u00a0(Ontario, Canada) and the\u00a0<a title=\"Aletheia University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aletheia_University\">Aletheia University<\/a>\u00a0Museum (Tamsui, Taiwan).<\/p>\n<p>Although Mackay had suffered from\u00a0<a title=\"Meningitis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meningitis\">meningitis<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Malaria\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malaria\">malaria<\/a>, he would die of\u00a0<a title=\"Esophageal cancer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Esophageal_cancer\">throat cancer<\/a>\u00a0on June 2, 1901 in Tamsui. He was interred near Oxford College (\u725b\u6d25\u5b78\u5802; now\u00a0<a title=\"Aletheia University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aletheia_University\">Aletheia University<\/a>) in Tamsui, Taiwan; more specifically, his grave is in a small cemetery in the eastern corner of the Tamkang Middle School campus, where his own son was interred adjacent to him.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0The major private\u00a0<a title=\"Christian\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christian\">Christian<\/a>\u00a0hospital in downtown\u00a0<a title=\"Taipei\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taipei\">Taipei<\/a>\u00a0is named\u00a0<a title=\"Mackay Memorial Hospital\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mackay_Memorial_Hospital\">Mackay Memorial Hospital<\/a>, built in 1912 to replace the smaller Mackay Hospital he started in Tamsui in 1882. In recent years Mackay&#8217;s life has been celebrated by advocates of a Taiwanese identity and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Taiwanese localization movement\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taiwanese_localization_movement\">historical understanding<\/a>\u00a0that stands distinct from the narratives brought to the island by Japan and China.<\/p>\n<p>On June 30, 2004, a large bust statue of George Leslie Mackay was dedicated outside the\u00a0<a title=\"Oxford County, Ontario\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oxford_County,_Ontario\">Oxford County<\/a>\u00a0offices in\u00a0<a title=\"Woodstock, Ontario\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Woodstock,_Ontario\">Woodstock, Ontario<\/a>. The delegation from\u00a0<a title=\"Taiwan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taiwan\">Taiwan<\/a>\u00a0in attendance included representatives from the\u00a0<a title=\"Aletheia University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aletheia_University\">Aletheia University<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a title=\"Presbyterian Church in Taiwan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Presbyterian_Church_in_Taiwan\">Presbyterian Church in Taiwan<\/a>. The event was also attended by representatives of the\u00a0<a title=\"Presbyterian Church in Canada\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Presbyterian_Church_in_Canada\">Presbyterian Church in Canada<\/a>, the\u00a0<a title=\"United Church of Canada\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Church_of_Canada\">United Church of Canada<\/a>, local, regional, and national Canadian dignitaries, and a number of Mackay descendants from across North America. One of his grandchildren is\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Dr. John Ross Mackay\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dr._John_Ross_Mackay\">Dr. John Ross Mackay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2006, a Canadian Television documentary was aired titled\u00a0<i>The Black Bearded Barbarian of Taiwan<\/i>. It was broadcast in both\u00a0<a title=\"Mandarin Chinese\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mandarin_Chinese\">Mandarin<\/a>\u00a0and English on\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"CJMT-TV\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CJMT-TV\">OMNI 2<\/a>\u00a0as part of their\u00a0<i>Signature Series<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Rohrer states that Mackay, &#8220;allowed himself to truly encounter and to be transformed by the people he sought to serve.&#8221; He gave the local Christians leadership roles in the churches, giving them perhaps more autonomy and freedom than any other western missionary to China in his period.<sup id=\"cite_ref-rohrer_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In 2008 Taiwan&#8217;s government invested in the production of the world&#8217;s first-ever\u00a0<a title=\"Taiwanese Hokkien\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taiwanese_Hokkien\">Taiwanese<\/a>\/English-language\u00a0<a title=\"Opera\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Opera\">opera<\/a>\u00a0based on Mackay&#8217;s life. Over a hundred opera singers and production crew from Europe, Asia, and the United States were brought for on the project.\u00a0<i>Mackay: The Black Bearded Bible Man<\/i>\u00a0had its world premier on 27 November 2008, at Taiwan&#8217;s\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"National Theater and Concert Hall\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Theater_and_Concert_Hall\">National Theater<\/a>\u00a0and ran until 30 November.<\/p>\n<p><i>Mackay: The Black Bearded Bible Man<\/i>\u00a0took more than five years to produce. Taiwanese composer\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Gordon S.W. Chin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gordon_S.W._Chin\">Gordon S.W. Chin<\/a>\u00a0and librettist\u00a0<a class=\"new\" title=\"Joyce Chiou (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Joyce_Chiou&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Joyce Chiou<\/a>\u00a0set out in 2002 to create an opera whose subject was drawn from Taiwanese lore and employed local settings. The large cast featured\u00a0<a title=\"Thomas Meglioranza\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Meglioranza\">Thomas Meglioranza<\/a>\u00a0(<a title=\"Baritone\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baritone\">baritone<\/a>) as George Mackay, Chen Mei-Lin (<a title=\"Soprano\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soprano\">soprano<\/a>) as Mackay&#8217;s wife Tiu\u207f Chhang-mi\u00e2, and Choi Seung-Jin (<a title=\"Tenor\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tenor\">tenor<\/a>) as\u00a0<a class=\"new\" title=\"Gi\u00e2m Chheng-ho\u00e2 (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Gi%C3%A2m_Chheng-ho%C3%A2&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Gi\u00e2m Chheng-ho\u00e2<\/a>, Mackay&#8217;s first disciple and follower in\u00a0<a title=\"Taiwan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taiwan\">Taiwan<\/a>. Chien Wen-Pin, a native of Taipei, conducted the\u00a0<a title=\"National Symphony Orchestra (Taiwan)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Symphony_Orchestra_(Taiwan)\">National Symphony Orchestra (Taiwan)<\/a>.\u00a0<a title=\"Lukas Hemleb\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lukas_Hemleb\">Lukas Hemleb<\/a>\u00a0directed the stage production.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 1871 Mackay became the first foreign missionary to be commissioned by the Canada Presbyterian Church (predecessor of both the\u00a0Presbyterian Church in Canada\u00a0and the\u00a0United Church of Canada), arriving in Taiwan on New Year&#8217;s Eve, 31 December 1871.
